Herdade Papa Leite Wines
The wine project for the Herdade Papa Leite is born out of a dream, dedication and hard work of Filipe Barreiros Cardoso and his team. At Herdade Papa Leite we believe that the vineyard is where everything begins.
The symbiosis between know-how and the will to do better, has translated into the wines produced today on the property.
The big dream is to produce, in Alentejo, different wines for great connoisseurs, and not just great wines.
Grape varieties are not unique to specific wine regions of the world, but certain locations combine better or worse conditions for the cultivation of a certain type of grape.
In Portugal, as in the rest of Europe, different varieties of Vitis Vinifera are used, which allows for the production of a greater variety of wine with different personalities.
At Herdade Papa Leite we selected the grapes Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Sémillion and Moscatel for the white wines and the grapes Carbernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Aragonez for the red wines.
The quality of the soil, the temperature and precipitation have a huge impact on the successful culture of a certain kind of specific grape variety. This results in the Terroir variety.
The microclimate of the Northeastern Alentejo, and the specific location of the property in Alter do Chão, create unique conditions for Terroir, reflected in the aroma and flavour of our wine.
The characteristics of the soil, with the existence of clay accumulated at a certain depth, combined with the inclination of the hill where the vine is planted, allow for excellent drainage. The exceptional solar exposure, sunrise to sunset, guarantees a good ripening of the grape.
From early on, it was clear that the grapes had great potential This fact was the motivation for the owner and his team to throw themselves into the project.
For this purpose, and in order to add even more complexity to the wine produced at property, we established partnerships with local producers for the management of vineyards of older grape varieties.
